Position Summary: The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and highly talented engineer/scientist to manage and perform in-situ process monitoring research in metal additive manufacturing (AM) onsite at Wright Patterson Air Force Base - AFRL. This work will drive novel research focused on in-situ process monitoring, data collection, and analysis of metallic additive manufacturing via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). This position will work with AFRL engineers/scientists to perform research designed to advance current understanding of the effects of laser manufacturing processes on materials through sensor development, implementation, data collection, and data analysis. Work activities may include:
• Planning and executing in-situ sensor focused experiments
• Integrating and modifying in-situ process sensors
• Operating, in-situ sensors/suites for laser powder bed fusion machinery
• Collecting and analyzing AM build data, including in-situ process monitoring data
• Working with analysis tools to extract physical meaning from in-situ process data
• Interfacing with machine learning, NDE, and characterization expertise at UDRI and AFRL to correlate in-situ process data to other data sources
• Building and routing of specimens for data collection, characterization, testing, and correlation
• Interfacing with data collection and management tools
This position will work with a team of AM research scientist in a new additive manufacturing research lab at AFRL.
Minimum Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics from an accredited University
• Experience in metal additive manufacturing with a focus on in-situ process monitoring or data analysis
• A minimum of three years of directly related experience
• Effective ability to communicate both written and verbally, work well with others, and possess the skills to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters or doctoral degree in engineering or physics
• Demonstrated experience with laser-based manufacturing equipment in support of research
• Understanding of lasers and optics
• Demonstrated experience with sensors for dynamic processes
• Understanding of laser/material interaction
• Publications in the field of in-situ sensing for LPBF
• Understanding of AM process modeling tools
• Demonstrated experience with data acquisition and analysis concepts
• Experience performing design of experiments (DOE's) and statistical analysis
• Coding/programming skills (python preferred)
• Basic understanding of machine learning concepts
• Ability to provide technical leadership for supporting personnel and collaborators.
