Position Summary:

The Air Vehicle Optimization Group is a diverse team of skilled engineers who work closely with Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to develop, prototype, and test numerical models, software, and hardware for the multidisciplinary analysis and design of aerospace vehicle concepts. The group brings together specialties in Aerospace, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics. The group combines state-of-the-art engineering tools with innovative ideas to support future aircraft design methods from conceptual design through flight testing. A few of the projects the group currently supports include: Computational Aircraft Prototype Synthesis (CAPS), Missile Enhancement via ReconfigurabLe Interceptor Nose (MERLIN), Efficient Supersonic Aircraft Vehicle (ESAV), X-56, and XQ-58A.

The group currently seeks an Associate Research Engineer to work with AFRL/RQVC’s Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Center (MSTC) to add capability to the HPC Modernization Program’s CREATE Air Vehicles (HPCMP CREATE-AV) ADAPT software to make it suitable for gradient and non-gradient based optimization. The primary duties will include: Working with other ADAPT software developers to define ADAPT requirements based on desired optimization capability; Teaching team members what is needed to enable optimization, instead of hindering it for individual projects; Serving as a point of contact between MSTC and the ADAPT development team; Integrating optimization algorithms, or optimization environments (Dakota, OpenMDAO, etc.) directly with ADAPT; Modifying the ADAPT execution engine, plugins, and/or external wrappers to enable calculation of gradients, including algorithmic differentiation where appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline
• Proficiency in C++ and/or Python computer languages.
• Experience in aircraft design methods
• Experience in CFD analysis
• Experience in design optimization
• Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship and ability to pass a National Agency check is required

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum qualifications, a preferred candidate will also meet one or more of the following qualifications:
• MS degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline
• Experience with Computational Aircraft Prototype Synthesis (CAPS) Program
• Experience with CBAERO, Cart3D and/or Fun3D CFD analysis programs
• Experience with multifidelity analysis and design
