Position Summary:

The University of Dayton Intensive English Program is seeking an ESL instructor. The position is a full-time benefit eligible instructor position for nine (9) months with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2023 and is renewable on a year to year basis. The salary is competitive based on experience.

The instructor in this position will be expected to: teach 18 hours a week primarily during the five 7-week terms per year in the Intensive English Program (IEP), or in combination with semester length bridge/pathway courses during the full fall and spring semesters; teach all skill areas at all levels: (Basic through Advanced [CEFR A1-C2]); support and facilitate instruction of English in other international support courses; utilize knowledge of and experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Content Based Instruction, and Task Based Learning, as well as best practices in these areas. Instructors will be required to be actively involved in placement testing and orientation, attend and participate in regular faculty meetings, occasionally substitute teach, engage in professional development and serve on IEP curriculum and other program development and University committees.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s in TESOL, Applied Linguistics
  • One-year ESL/EFL experience as an instructor, e.g., designing and implementing lesson plans and instructional activities, delivering lessons/instruction, providing formative and summative feedback to students, creating and administering student assessments, etc.
  • Ability to use various instructional technology and software, e.g., computer and projector, smartboards, Kahoot!, Quizlet, publishers’ learning aids (e.g. Pearson MyEnglishLab), Google Classroom, etc.
  • Effective written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • MA in Teaching English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics
  • Successful experience in one or more of the following:
    • Two years or more of teaching in an intensive English program
    • Teaching from novice to advanced level students in all skills areas
    • Student Learning Outcome (SLO) driven curriculum and assessment
    • Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP; specifically STEM), Content Based Instruction, and Task Based Learning, as well as best practices in these areas.
    • Working collaboratively
    • Teaching abroad
    • Participating in service to department and/or language program
    • Utilizing a Learning Management System (LMS) in the classroom and in instruction
    • Teaching and working with individuals from socially and culturally diverse communities
  • Working knowledge of a second language (ranging from ability to speak one or more non-English based languages to knowledge of linguistic difficulties ELLs face due to their native language)
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Professional development in the field of TESOL
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in one or more of the following:
    • Oral communication skills
    • Interpersonal communication skills
    • Organizational skills
    • Classroom management skills
  • Commitment to the breadth of education including education of the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
