The Technical Director is a 12 month full-time staff position in the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Technology program, that will be responsible for overseeing operations and maintenance of the Experimental Theatre and Concert Hall (in coordination with concert hall manager) of the new Roger Glass Center for the Arts, the Black Box Theatre in Fitz Hall, and the Scene Shop in Kennedy Union. The Technical Director will support the production season of the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Technology program (four mainstage shows each year and select events for theatre, dance, and music programming), in addition to other programming requiring TD support in the Glass Center over the summer months. The Technical Director provides cost analysis, construction drawings, and schedules for each production in cooperation with the creative team, and attends production meetings, tech/dress rehearsals of shows, as well as a majority of performances.

This position's start date coincides with the opening of the new Glass Center for the Arts, an exciting new building that will house our new Experimental Theatre. The Theatre, Dance, and Performance Technology program at the University of Dayton provides a BA degree grounded in the liberal arts. Our program provides four theoretical and practical concentrations: acting, performance technology, dance, and applied theatre - all informed by a Marianist tradition of community engagement and social justice. We adhere to production guidelines that ensure educational spaces for students, faculty, and staff to thrive, including theatrical intimacy direction, and a work/life balance approach that promotes equity.

Minimum Qualifications:

MFA in Theatre Technology or related field conferred by July 1 2023, OR Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and a minimum of 5 years experience as a technical director for a reputable professional company or academic theatre program
A minimum 3 years experience working in a scene shop in an academic or professional setting
A minimum of 3 years experience working as a technical director or assistant technical director in theatre
Proficiency with standard shop equipment and strong carpentry, painting, and theatrical effects skills
Ability to create and interpret technical drawings needed for scenic elements
Experience with theatrical rigging techniques and electrics hang
Experience with Vectorworks or AutoCAD
Excellent communication skills with ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
Articulated ability to support the University of Dayton’s commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Ability to work flexible hours for scheduled load ins/outs, rehearsals, and performances
Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and flexibility in a team environment, as well as problem-solving and collaboration skills

Articulated commitment to preserving quality of work while staying on budget
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Ability to create a positive learning atmosphere for students
Valid driver's license with low risk driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

Master of Fine Arts in Technical Theatre from an accredited program
Evidence of engagement in activity designed to remove barriers and to increase participation by groups historically underrepresented in this field
Experience supervising college students
Experience with technical theatre software
Experience with automation and projection for the stage
Ability to assist with design support
Ability to conduct eco-theatre practices that promote an environmentally sustainable green theatre culture in our approach to the production season

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
