Position Summary:

We are seeking seeking a motivated Engineer to support test programs that produce mechanical property data for mechanical characterization, structural integrity evaluation, and life prediction methodology.

The Non-Structural Materials (NSM) Division at the University of Dayton Research (UDRI) Institute is seeking a highly motivated Engineer to support test programs that produce mechanical property data for mechanical characterization, structural integrity evaluation, and life prediction methodology. Position is within the Advanced Materials Characterization Group and is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Roles and responsibilities include assisting with equipment configuration necessary to support test programs, participate in project planning, execute plans as a test operator, work closely with technical staff in all facets of operating and maintaining a mechanical testing facility. This position principally supports laboratory operations and will incur periodic activities that are dirty and oily.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics from a nationally accredited university.
• Ability to analyze and solve problems within assigned area with guidance from senior personnel.
• Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, coordinate activities, and understand scope of task to make appropriate recommendations.
• Effective written and oral communication skills necessary to provide technical documentation (including schematics) and progress reports.
• Experience using basic mechanical power and hand tools.
• Capable of periodic lifting up to 50 lbs. and moving a pallet jack with loads up to 200 lbs.
• Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. Federal Government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Able to obtain and maintain necessary security clearances for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Basic understanding of mechanical testing protocol and material properties.
• Experience using laboratory tools and test equipment.
• Basic machine shop experience setting up and operating mill, lathe, bandsaw, etc. and associated hand tools to manufacture test equipment components.
• Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar programming languages.
• Experience with SolidWorks or similar drawing software capable of developing mechanical drawings for use and knowledge documentation.
• Basic understanding of ABAQUS, Ansys, or other similar finite element programs.
• Demonstrated ability to be self-taught and perform topic research supporting new requirements.
