Position Summary:

The Air Vehicle Optimization Group is a diverse team of skilled engineers who work closely with Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to develop, prototype, and test numerical models, software, and hardware for the multidisciplinary analysis and design of aerospace vehicle concepts. The group brings together specialties in Aerospace, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics. The group combines state-of-the-art engineering tools with innovative ideas to support future aircraft design methods from conceptual design through flight testing. A few of the projects the group currently supports include: Computational Aircraft Prototype Synthesis (CAPS), Missile Enhancement via ReconfigurabLe Interceptor Nose (MERLIN), Efficient Supersonic Aircraft Vehicle (ESAV), X-56, and XQ-58A.

The group currently seeks an Associate Research Engineer (P1) or a Research Engineer (P2) to assist our customers in the area of structured overset-grid CFD techniques and their application to aero-optics and aircraft integration of tactical laser weapon systems. The successful candidate will be involved in all phases of the CFD workflow, including geometry cleanup/defeaturing, structured-overset grid generation, application of CFD solvers using in-house DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers computational resources, post-processing/visualization to analyze results, and reporting of results to AFRL personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate Research Engineer (P1) Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to obtain a SECRET Level security clearance
• BS in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, physical sciences, applied mathematics, or related field
• Proficiency with Linux and/or MacOSX operating systems
• Proficiency with general analysis tools such as Matlab
• Strong computational background in performing complex CFD studies
• Proficiency with one or more geometry manipulation/grid generation pre-processing tools (i.e. SolidWorks, CADfix, GridGen, Pointwise, ICEM)
• Proficiency with one or more post-processing visualization tools (i.e. FieldView, Ensight, TecPlot)
• Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship and ability to obtain a Secret Level security clearance is required.

Research Engineer (P2) Additional Minimum Qualifications
• 3+ years of directly related experience in CFD workflow

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum qualifications, a preferred candidate will also meet one or more of the following qualifications:
• MS or higher in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, physical sciences, applied mathematics, or related field is strongly preferred
• Experience performing CFD studies in a massively parallel environment
• Specific experience with OVERFLOW CFD solver
• Specific experience with related overset-grid software tools such as PEGASUS and Chimera Grid Tools
• Previous background in aero-optics and/or aircraft integration of tactical systems
