UDRI seeks candidates experienced in material modeling to support basic and applied research in materials characterization and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) to be performed on-site and in support of the Materials & Manufacturing Directorate, Materials State Awareness Branch (AFRL/RXCA) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH. The researcher will be supporting single- and multi-physics model development used to guide and improve experiments. The research goals are to improve assessment of ceramic and carbon matrix composites by merging or adapting NDE modalities that include ultrasonics, x-ray computed tomography, electromagnetic, and/or thermographic methods.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, or related field.
• Minimum of three years of directly related experience.
• Experience with modeling composite material behavior and/or wave/field-material interactions using finite element method and/or similar numerical approaches.
• Experience with MATLAB or scientific data analysis programming languages such as or Python.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Interest and ability to communicate and interact with multidisciplinary scientists.
• Willingness to publish research results in peer reviewed journals and present research at conferences, informal internal meetings, etc.
• Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• PhD degree in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience developing acoustics, electromagnetics, heat flow, mechanics, and/or multimodal physics-based numerical models and inverse optimization methods applied to those models.
• Proficiency with commercial finite element software such as COMSOL and/or Abaqus.
Experience working with socially and culturally diverse community.
• Experience with image processing of microscopy and/or x-ray CT data and application of registration, segmentation, and classification tools on such image data sets.
• Prior demonstrated experience in writing and publishing peer reviewed journal articles and presentations at conferences.
