Position Summary:

Join the University of Dayton's IT department and play a key role in supporting the reliable, secure technology services that power our University community. In this role you will work alongside other members of the Enterprise Enabling Technologies team to maintain our server environments, monitor system performance and security, apply upgrades, and help support a stable infrastructure. You will also work with other cross-functional teams across UDit to build new enterprise systems. This position is responsible for all administration activities associated with Linux based servers. Will perform server administration of virtual and physical servers, maintain server hardware, change management, performance monitoring, and system maintenance. Monitor security alerts and install tested patches and upgrades. This position will provide senior-level support deploying, updating, and securing enterprise-wide applications and services. This position requires a high degree of technical capabilities, communication, and project management skills. Position will be required to work on call hours (after hours, weekend, and holidays) occasionally.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications for the Senior Systems Engineer:
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field OR at least four years of equivalent relevant experience
• At least three years of relevant professional experience
• Experience as a Linux server administrator in an enterprise environment
• Working knowledge of servers, storage, networking, firewalls, and virtualization
• Ability to collaborate professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff
• Ability to work under strict time constraints in mission critical situations
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff
• Experience working on multiple projects in a fast paced, dynamic environment

A Lead Systems Engineer must meet all Senior Systems Engineer minimum qualifications in addition to the qualifications listed below:
• Ten or more years of experience in a technical capacity in the following areas
• Linux system administration
• Database Management Systems
• Configuration management systems
• Broad knowledge and experience with Linux administration and open source technologies
• Proven experience in systems design and development
• Experience leading projects and teams

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• At least five years of experience in a Systems Engineer environment
• Direct experience with Banner, Oracle
• Experience working with virtualization technologies (XCP-ng, Proxmox, VMWare)
• Experience working with containerization technologies (Podman, Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience with databases (MySQL, MariaDB, Postgres)
• Experience with load balancers / reverse proxies (F5, HAProxy)
• Experience with Java Application Servers (Tomcat, Jetty)
• Experience with HTTP Servers (Apache, Caddy)
• Experience working with SAN and NAS storage technologies
• Experience working with HP Blades
• Working knowledge of networking
• Demonstrated troubleshooting on a variety of systems
• Prior professional work experience in higher education
• Previous relevant experience in a large, enterprise environment
