Position Summary:

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Dayton invites applications for a Faculty of Practice position to start August 16, 2023. This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position with a path for promotion. The successful candidate will work with a diverse faculty in the Department, engaging in highly impactful computer science teaching and research. The Department offers a stimulating academic environment with active research programs with ten cutting-edge research labs in growing areas of computer science. Recently, the Department has experienced significant growth in terms of faculty, facilities, and students. We offer Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and Computer Information Systems, Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and a Graduate Certificate in Autonomous Systems and Data Science. Our Bachelor of Computer Science program is ABET accredited, and our Bachelor of Computer Science with a Concentration in Cyber Defense is an NSA-designated National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense.

We seek applicants committed to excellence in undergraduate/graduate education whose industry experience and competence as a practitioner will be mutually beneficial Expectations of these positions include developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate capstone and graduate software engineering projects, and assisting with co-op, internship, and career opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. In the Faculty of Practice role, the successful candidate will be expected to remain active in the professional practice through consulting activities and/or industry collaborations that relate well to the scholarship of teaching and learning in computer science and related fields. Additionally, the successful candidate will be eligible for promotion in accordance with the new promotion policy for Faculty of Practice which is currently being developed for implementation in the coming academic year.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or an equivalent field.
  • Industrial experience.
  • Promise of excellence in incorporating industry standards and practices into the classroom.
  • Articulated commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Effective written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science
  • Successful experience in any or all of the following:
    • Effectively engaging, teaching, mentoring, and/or advising students of diverse backgrounds.
    • Teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
    • Working with socially and culturally diverse communities.
    • Working collaboratively with various constituents, e.g., colleagues, community members, and industry representatives.
    • Fostering domestic and/or international partnerships in industry and/or academia.
    • Developing curricula, courses and/or lab activities.
    • Developing and sustaining partnerships between higher education and industry related to computer science, especially including supplementing the classroom learning environment with direct industry input.
    • Participating in industrial communities and professional societies.
    • Working in the industry for four or more years.
  • Ability to establish collaborations with industry partners to bring projects and opportunities for co-op, internship, and full-time jobs for our students.
  • Excellent classroom management skills.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Commitment to the breadth of education, including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession.

  • Statement articulating their commitment to excellence in industry practice, and addressing how the candidate’s industry experience can be incorporated into the classroom to enrich student learning and industry partnership plans, maximum of three pages.
  • Statement articulating their commitment to teaching, preparedness to teach computer science curriculum relating it to previous teaching experience, maximum of two pages.
  • Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts (scanned into one document for upload). If coursework is not transcripted, please submit a letter from your advisor indicating coursework is complete.
  • Contact information for three references, at least one of which can address teaching abilities and the others can address research experience. Letter writers will receive instructions on how to upload the letters upon completion of the application.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8, 2021 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status. The University will continue to monitor the state of the pandemic on campus and in the community as well as developments in federal and state requirements, and also will continue to regularly consult with public health officials and our medical panel. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, our protocols and requirements are subject to change depending on conditions on campus or in our community, and government requirements.
