Position Summary:

The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community and the Hanley Sustainability Institute invites qualified applicants to apply for our new joint role as Student Engagement Coordinator for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability. The work of the new Coordinator will be focused on facilitating and supporting volunteer opportunities and experiential learning for River Stewards, HSI Student Leaders, and students majoring in Sustainability. Their role will connect students to community partners in support of larger community-engaged projects, and UD’s municipal, non-profit, and industry partners through summer fellowship and intern programs. This is a full time benefit eligible position that offers health, dental and vision insurance, retirement, disability, tuition assistance for you and your dependents, vacation/sick accrual and holiday pay.

The Student Engagement Coordinator for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability provides support for University of Dayton programs that connect students to meaningful opportunities to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability in Dayton and the wider Miami Valley watershed. Their work sustains the University’s longstanding and impactful River Stewards Program, through which students with diverse majors work with community organizations, and which each year accounts for over 2,000 hours of community engagement and service. Their work also grows and develops programming through the Hanley Sustainability Institute (HSI) to involve Sustainability students in community-engaged partnerships that provide hands-on and experiential learning.

The coordinator joins teams in the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community and HSI, reporting to the Executive Director of the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community as well as HSI’s Director of Student Programs. Their work will ensure that students have the coordination and support that they need to be able to meaningfully participate in community-led efforts to be sustainable stewards of the region’s rich natural resources and habitats. Responsibilities of this position include coordinating River Steward and Student Leader engagement hours, planning and hosting events centered on environmental stewardship and sustainability for the Rivers Institute and HSI, collaborating with campus and community stakeholders on student-centered conservation initiatives, and establishing and overseeing internships that connect students with both community partners in support of larger community-engaged projects, and with municipal and corporate partners through summer fellowship and intern programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor’s degree in (BA/BS) in environmental science, sustainability, environmental education, geosciences, natural resource management, or a related field
* Experience coordinating volunteers or student workers, especially those working with the public, non-profit organizations, or municipal agencies
* Experience organizing and facilitating events, especially in partnership with community organizations or grassroots organizations
* Experience developing relationships and facilitating collaboration with multiple partners with diverse backgrounds and missions
* Ability to mentor students with diverse backgrounds
* Excellent written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

* Master’s degree in sustainability, environmental studies/sciences, human rights or a related field that explores society's relationships with the environment
* Excellent presentation and verbal communication skills
* Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students through professional experience, internships or similar programs
* Supervisory and/or advising experience
* Demonstrated experience in recruitment, hiring and supervision of students with emphasis on an unbiased, fair and consistent process
* Expressed willingness to engage in Catholic and Marianist educational values
