The Multifunctional Structures and Materials Group (MFSM) that is part of the Structures & Materials Engineering Division in the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and highly talented engineer to perform research and development (R&D) in the area of multifunctional structures and materials. The engineer will perform highly multidisciplinary research in new structure and material developments to integrate structures with additional functions or enhanced capabilities. A key thrust of this position is R&D in composites made from various engineering textiles and textile techniques. The engineer will also be tasked with operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, building testing apparatuses, and purchasing required materials and equipment. Additionally, the engineer will help to grow the group business through proposal writing, advertising growing capabilities, and other business development activities.

Minimum Qualifications: |
• A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, SolidWorks or other CAD programs, Matlab, and computer programming. • Experience with operating/performing various textile systems/techniques such as sewing, tailored fiber placement (TFP), embroidery, weaving, etc. • Experience with various textile systems/techniques in a business environment. • The ability to be “hands on” in the lab performing physical labor in clean and dirty environments. • Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally. • An ability to work well with others and motivate fellow team members. • The skills to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision. • The ability to properly document technical data generated during R&D for reports, presentations, and preserving IP rights. • Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred Qualifications: |
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
• Experience operating Laystitch or ZSK TFP systems. • Experience performing mechanical testing. • Experience using optical or electron microscopy. • Understanding of finite element analysis.
