Position Summary:

Guided by our Catholic, Marianist identity as a University for the Common Good, Academic Advisors provide mission-centric academic advising by assisting undecided students in creating an educational plan designed to foster academic achievement, in navigating their academic, social and wellness journeys while fostering belonging, enhancing agency and engagement inside and outside the classroom, and by encouraging the identification and pursuit of vocational goals. The staff member serving in this role will be responsible for advising and student
success related tasks benefiting students in the Discover Program. This includes
academic advising across multiple disciplines, vocational exploration, teaching courses in the Discover Program
curriculum, and providing student success interventions/referrals. This position, in
collaboration with the staff in the CAS Dean’s Office, will coordinate with various
campus partners to support Discover students from the time they apply to the University
of Dayton and up to the student’s major declaration.

Discover Program:
The Discover program at UD provides students with an opportunity to engage in
intentional and individualized major exploration across multiple disciplines in order to assist them in successfully
declaring a major that aligns with their academic, personal, and professional goals.
Through individualized academic advising, coursework, and experiential learning,
Discover Students engage in meaningful self-reflection and vocational exploration with a
goal of identifying an academic and career path that will allow them to impact their
communities in ways that align with their interests, values, and skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree
● 1 year of experience working with college-aged students or equivalent
experience in secondary education
● Strong interpersonal skills
● Effective written and verbal communication skills
● Strong critical thinking skills and adaptability to provide advising across
all disciplines at the university
● Ability to maintain discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive student
information
● Basic understanding of common challenges for students in college
● Ability to develop and maintain positive connections with campus
constituents, students and their families
● Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Suite (Sheets,
Docs, Drive, Calendar)
● Ability to relate to and work with diverse students, faculty and staff

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

● Master’s preferred, preferably in education or related field
● Professional or graduate experience working in higher education
● Professional or graduate experience in academic advising, student success or
counseling
● Experience using educational software systems (Banner, Starfish, etc.) to track
and document academic information
● Experience working with undecided/undeclared students
● Experience instructing/teaching
● Knowledge of and sensitivity to values central to a Marianist education, including
a commitment to social justice and learning in diverse settings
