This position is located at UDRI's facility in Warner Robins, GA. UDRI’s Sustainment Technologies Transition division (STT) supports government and commercial clients in the development, prototyping, testing, qualification, and documentation of additive manufacturing (AM) parts, equipment, and processes for commercialization and production. This position will focus on understanding the material science issues of additive manufacturing (AM), cold spray (CS), applied corrosion technologies (ACT), post process, and connecting material properties to part end-use needs. This will include material/process risk assessments and selection, troubleshooting, ideation for process improvement and/or material replacement, providing subject matter expertise on structure-property and process-property relationships, test plan development and execution, test data interpretation, and validation of part performance vs. end-use requirements. The position will be initially focused on metal powder bed fusion and polymer fused deposition modeling additive manufacturing.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BS degree in relevant engineering field (such as chemical, materials, polymer, metallurgy, aerospace)
• 8 years of directly related experience in materials and material properties, including experience with development of materials and material properties for product design engineering of metals, plastics, and/or composites
• 8 years of experience with material characterization including method selection and/or development, data collection and analysis
• 5 years of experience with Design of Experiments
• 5 years of experience with polymer engineering, characterization, or product development
• Experience with heat treatment techniques
• Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication and presentation skills with coworkers and clients at all levels
• Demonstrated self-motivation with ability to work with minimal supervision
• Working knowledge of US Air Force policies and procedures, including ITAR
• Due to the nature of this position, US citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will
bring many of the following:

• MS degree or higher in relevant engineering field (such as chemical, materials, polymer, metallurgy, aerospace)
• Experience with additive manufacturing, including process parameters.
• Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of structure-property and process-property relationships to additive manufacturing projects
• More than 8 years of directly related experience in materials and materials properties, including experience with development of materials and material properties for product design engineering of metals, plastics, and/or composites
• More than 8 years of experience with material characterization including method selection and/or development, data collection and analysis
• 5 years of experience with heat treatment techniques
• Experience teaching or training technical course content
• Experience supervising characterization or testing laboratory operations
• Experience identifying, vetting and managing external service providers
• Experience managing personnel
• Demonstrated experience with equipment specification, procurement, installation and/or implementation
• Demonstrated success with Six Sigma and/or other process improvement methods in a manufacturing environment
