Position Summary:

The Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at the University of Dayton invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in Hydrogeology to join the faculty beginning August 16, 2022. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop upper-level lecture and lab and/or field courses in the area of their expertise as well as engage with the University of Dayton’s Hanley Sustainability Institute, http://go.udayton.edu/hsi and River’s Insitute   https://udayton.edu/artssciences/ctr/fitz/rivers_inst/index.php , which provides leadership training and engages with a suite of local partners around issues pertaining to regional freshwater resources.

Expectations of the position include developing a nationally competitive, extramurally funded research program that involves undergraduate students, which contributes to transformative teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate level, and intersects creatively to strengthen and/or complement the department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences. Teaching expectations include upper-level courses in Hydrogeology, Environmental Instrumentation Lab, Introductory level courses (e.g., Dynamic Earth, Environmental Geology, Physical Geology), and occasional undergraduate seminars. Mentoring undergraduate research is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

- ABD nearing completion in Geosciences or a related discipline specialized in Hydrogeology.
- Articulated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching at the undergraduate level.
- Effective written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and maintain low risk driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

- PhD in Geosciences or a related discipline with specialization in Hydrogeology at the time of application.
- Successful experience in any or all of the following:
--- teaching at the undergraduate level,
--- teaching field courses,
--- research grant and/or contract applications,
--- postdoctoral research,
--- mentoring undergraduate student research,
--- working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team,
--- working with and teaching socially and culturally diverse communities,
- Record of peer-reviewed scientific publications in the area of hydrogeology.
- Innovative use of theoretical, observational, modeling, and/or experimental approaches to address fundamental problems in subsurface hydro-geosciences. Examples include measurement and modeling of groundwater resources; local and regional-scale groundwater dynamics and groundwater quality; the impact of climate change on groundwater recharge, storage and use; groundwater contaminants; or remote and/or geophysical sensing of groundwater.
- Demonstration of a teaching/research program capable of engaging scientific questions in the Dayton region and broader Miami Valley, which possesses the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to curriculum development.
- Interest in developing experiential learning opportunities related to a candidate’s research interests.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Effective oral communication skills.
- Effective classroom management skills.

A complete application consists of a one-page cover letter addressing all minimum qualifications and all pertinent preferred qualifications met, curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests that is no more than three pages, a statement of teaching interest and philosophy of no more than two pages, a one-page statement of commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion and how these principles inform your work. If Ph.D. is not conferred at the time of application, a letter from the advisor must be submitted indicating progress toward completion of the Ph.D. Contact information for at least three references. Letters of recommendation will be required at a later part of the interview process.
