Position Summary:

We are seeing an individual to perform quick reaction in-house metallographic, fractographic, physical and chemical characterization of materials used in aerospace structural and engine applications, with emphasis on metallic materials and processes. This person will interact with customers seeking support from the Structural Materials Evaluation Team through project planning, failure analysis, and material characterization related to urgent high-profile USAF materials and manufacturing needs. This person will perform quick reaction in-house metallographic, fractographic, physical and chemical characterization of materials used in aerospace structural and engine applications, with emphasis on metallic materials and processes. This person will maintain expertise in failure analysis and materials characterization techniques to include currency in the operation of analytical tools and devices. This person’s responsibilities will include: supporting mishap investigations; providing expertise and consulting on materials and processing issues, reviewing /characterizing emerging technologies, specs and standards reviews, and project management. Under guidance from the Team Lead and experienced engineers, this person will prepare and execute in-house analysis and test plans; generate high quality test and evaluation reports; prepare and present briefings to all levels of management and leadership; and participate in activities supporting laboratory operations. This person will interact with the chemical analysis team, mechanical testing team, and the nondestructive characterization team to leverage those in-house capabilities to accomplish their tasks. Position requires periodic travel for aircraft mishap site evaluation, manufacturing process reviews, and meetings. Eligible for part time telework on irregular basis as mission permits.

Minimum Qualifications:

R2 Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, materials science, or closely related engineering/science discipline.
• 3 years of relevant experience in engineering/science position.
• Experience in metallic materials characterization, processing, and failure analysis.
• Characterization techniques: Light microscopy, SEM/EDS, microhardness, bulk hardness.
• Experience in sample preparation: mounting, polishing, sputter coating.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Power Point, Excel.
• Data interpretation for various techniques mentioned above.
• Proficient written and oral communication skills.
• Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Experience working with socially and culturally diverse communities.

R3 Minimum Qualifications:
An R3 must meet all of the R2 Minimum Qualifications in addition to having 8 years of related experience in metallic materials characterization, processing, and failure analysis, OR a Master’s degree with 7 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Experience in metallic failure analysis of conventional and additive metallic materials.
• Proficient in reading complex engineering drawings related to aircraft systems.
• Hands-on experience with aircraft or aircraft systems.
• Experience working with Standards Development Organizations.
