The University of Dayton School of Law invites applications for the position of Director of the Law Library and Professor or Associate Professor of Law (one position) (hereafter “Director”). 

Reporting directly to the Dean of the University of Dayton School of Law, the Director maintains responsibility for all aspects of the library in coordination with information technology management and operations, including but not limited to managing the physical resources of the Law Library; developing and maintaining the Law Library collection; providing reference and research services as well as research instruction; enhancing the technological environment of the Law Library;  budgeting, financial stewardship, and purchasing; hiring, supervising, and managing personnel; and strategic planning and implementation. 

The Law Library, in conjunction with Information Technology Services, coordinates, and collaborates with other Law School faculty and staff members in providing, the array of information services, which are delivered through both traditional and hybrid methods. While the Law Library’s primary mission is to serve the current Law School community (students, faculty, and staff), the Assistant Dean also manages and coordinates access to Law Library facilities so as to serve a diverse clientele including other University of Dayton students, faculty, and staff; members of the bar; and members of the general public seeking access to legal materials.

The Director ensures the Law Library’s collection and resources are all sufficient to meet the primary goals of supporting the teaching, learning, research, and service needs of the Law School community, and also ensures, in areas relevant to the position, that the Law School complies with accreditation standards and membership requirements of the ABA and AALS.

• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or international equivalent

• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited institution.

• Professional library employment experience or related professional employment experience

• Supervisory experience.

• Comprehensive understanding of the functioning and operation of an academic law school library and its capacity to further the overall mission of a law school.

• Interest in advancing the profession of law librarianship, including service and scholarship for all library faculty, as well as teaching where appropriate.

• Ability to review, evaluate, and align services with ongoing changes in curriculum and accreditation standards.

• Familiarity with information and instructional technologies, as well as current technology trends in the legal profession and law libraries; 

• Interest in learning new technology and integrating important technology developments into the Law Library’s mission.

• Experience working with people from culturally and socially diverse backgrounds; 

• Sensitivity to Catholic and Marianist values including educating the whole person and a commitment to social justice and service to the community, university and profession

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Three (3) years academic law library administrative experience, including budget and financial management, and vendor negotiations of complex contracts.

•  Successful experience in one or more of the following:

  • advancing the profession of law librarianship, including service and scholarship for all library faculty, as well as teaching where appropriate.

  •  reviewing, evaluating, and aligning services with ongoing changes in curriculum and accreditation standards.

  • information and instructional technologies, as well as current technology trends in the legal profession and law libraries

  • integrating important technology developments into the Law Library’s mission

  • at least 3 years supervising others

  • effectively teaching.

• Effective interpersonal communication skills

• Effective oral communication skills
